Two project management tools at opposite ends of the spectrum. Linear is minimal and fast. Jira is comprehensive and slow. I have used both with teams of different sizes. Here is the honest take.
Linear Is for Speed
Linear is the fastest project management tool I have used. Creating a task takes seconds. The keyboard shortcuts are excellent. If you are a developer or product manager, you can navigate the entire app without leaving the keyboard.
The interface is opinionated. Linear assumes you know what you are doing. There is less hand-holding than Jira. If your team includes non-technical members, they will need time to adjust.
Jira Is for Complexity
Jira handles every project management scenario. Custom workflows, dependencies, sprints, releases, roadmaps — all built in. If you are running a large software project with multiple teams and complex processes, Jira is the only realistic option.
But all that power comes with cost. Jira is slow. Pages take time to load. The interface feels dated. And configuring Jira is a project of its own — many teams spend weeks on initial setup.
Linear Strengths
Speed. The UI is responsive and the keyboard shortcuts are first-class. Cycle time on small features is much faster in Linear than in Jira.
Clean defaults. Linear’s opinionated structure means you do not have to configure a lot. The defaults work for most teams.
Modern API and integrations. Linear plays well with GitHub, Figma, and other developer tools.
Jira Strengths
Scale. Jira can handle hundreds of projects and thousands of users. Linear is not built for that scale.
Reporting. Jira’s reporting and analytics are unmatched. If you need to extract metrics across multiple projects, Jira wins.
Customization. Jira is infinitely configurable. Anything you can think of can be modeled. Linear has opinions and limits.
The Cost of Switching
Both tools take time to adopt. Linear’s learning curve is shorter — a few days. Jira takes weeks to configure properly. If your team is moving from one to the other, plan for the transition.
Which One Is Right
For a small or mid-size team that ships software fast: Linear. For an enterprise team with complex processes, multiple workstreams, and strict reporting needs: Jira. For a team that does not know which they need: start with Linear. Migrate to Jira if you grow out of it.
